Infrared timers like the XT are accurate to 1/100 sec and are very durable and not affected by rain.
I doubt the iPhone app is that accurate if the GPS cannot resolve within 5 metres. And phones do not like moisture, or impacts.

I have the mini-lap. it works great.
I also have the XT mini. It's cheap and it works, the only complaint i have about it (and it's a complaint i can easily live with) is that it only reads to tenths of a second.
Yup, the operation on the XT Mini is brain dead simple.
