Who has winterized there bike and what have you done to ready for winter ? Mine will sit in the garage all winter, insulated but not heated, and was planning on just filling the tank up and plugging the battery tender in once and awhile, starting it up once a week or so.
Sent ya a PM bro.
My first winter were my bike hasn't been in the basement or a warm part of the house, I really miss a basement entrance I used to have.
I bought a motorcycle jack from crappy tire, put the bike on it, so that the tires are off the concrete gragae floor, cleaned and waxed every inch of it, full tank of gas with stabilizer, battery tender hooked up to the battery, and plugged the exhaust opening with paper towels to prevent any bugs from going in, oil is fresh, and put a breathable cover on it, and it will stay that way till the next season. If you start the bike periodically, you will possibly have condensation form due to the heat/cold mix, which is bad.
Hey Alex Thanks for the plugging exhaust reminder, I totally forgot about that. I've been trying to get my bike up on my jack I bought, same one from canadian tire, but need another strong body, the bike has to be held upright while the jack is pushed under. Tried it on my own and the jack hits the frame on the stand side. Soooo I'll find someone this weekend to come over and get it ready. The harley must be lower than my VTX, how did you get it on the jack ?
So long as I had the bike upright and level, the jack would just slide underneath. I was able to do it myself, just took a bit of time to place the jack under the bike with one hand.
I heard it is better to keep the bike on it's wheels so that the springs are compressed, otherwise the seals might dry up. Also apparently the cold concrete isn't too much of a concern with the way newer tires are made these days, but just to be safe you can always just toss some plywood underneath the wheels. Hope everyone has a good winter!
I have mine sitting on a 8 foot piece of plywood left behind when i bought the house but still want it in the air. Will have to look into your thoughts on seals drying out. Alex will try sliding the jack under by myself Friday, booked a few days off so have loads of time and also have to go and buy a snowblower, have been cleaning the driveway out since 6 pm and now 8:42 , almost 3 hours of snow, christ my back is sore.
What I did was dabbed my finger with a little engine oil, and rubbed the forks right where it meets the shocks. Then I put weight on the front so that the shocks would compress a few times to get the oil into the seals. Then I would store it - all lubed and ready to go. BTW - I hate winter!
Thanks for the tip Alex, just finished putting my bike up on the stand/jack. I sat on the bike and reached over with my foot pulling the stand under and then reached a little further and a couple of pumps with my foot the bike was upright and in the air. Piece of cake, I asked a couple of friends over the last two weeks and no shows, so what comes around goes around. Although I will have the balls to say fcuk off I'm busy instead of just not showing up with no explaination. Happy Holidays everyone and a Happy New Year. Keep in mind I'm in gods country now and will be looking for new roads to tear up come 2010 riding season.
That's good to hear. Merry Christmas everyone! And hears to great new year!
Hey guys! Is it spring yet? lol I pretty much did the same as Alex cept my battery was brought inside. And about once a month I've been plugging it in to the tender for 24 hrs. How is everyones winter going?
Hey Cat! Winter is almost over! They are calling for 9 degrees by the end of this week! Very exciting!
Hey! I know!!! Going up to my dad's next weekend to get my bike started etc. Got a heated vest so might just bring her down to TO already. Been seeing bikes out already and its making me insanely jealous!
I'm still waiting for some rain to wash the roads of the salt and sand. Soon!
That's supposed to happen this weekend cannot wait! Just hope my drive home is dry
14 degrees today. I'm getting stoked!
Already gone 300+ km's already.
I already took the V-Rod out on Saturday and Sunday. It was nice out although I took it real easy with the dirt on the road. I can't wait till it rains and our roads get cleared up a bit. I'm hoping we have some nice days during March break.
Took the bike out the other day and tasted salt for hours after haha I guess I could have put my front fender back on until the roads cleared up but whatever it looks cool
